The rail link

Lyon-Turin: unavoidable

Freight: from road to rail

Unrivalled benefits: significantly reduced pollution, reduced noise nuisances, improved safety.

Today, 85% of goods traffic between France and Italy goes by road. Thanks to the ease of use and time-saving features of the new system, the transfer of a large part of the volume of goods toward rail transport will constitute a great improvement.

In this term, the new link would transfer more than 700 000 trucks annually on the train by the year 2035. The objective of the French and Italian governments is to achieve a massive transfer of freight from road to rail, thereby in the same time increasing capacity to approximately 40 million tons transported annually thank to the new line . This would include both classic rail transport, combined transport, and also railway motorway, a system permitting to load full lorries or trailers onto wagons specially designed to this effect.

Reducing pollution and nuisances

Thanks to the Lyon Turin link, the transfer of a large part of the freight traffic from road to rail in the Alps will contribute the reduction of toxic substances in the atmosphere by about 700,000 tons per year. Then approximately 2.5 million tons/year in full exploitation.

Moreover, the new rail link will pass through a tunnel for the main part (about 90% of the common Franco-Italian section), and new, more silent materials, will be used to build the railway tracks so as to reduce noise nuisances.
